NOFX and Fuzigish

I was asked by JP, from Fuzigish, to shoot pics at the NOFX gig at the Bassline on Monday night. I only got to shoot for about 3 songs during the gig because the barricade that they setup up for photographers collapsed, and NOFX didn't allow photographers on stage so.... Here is what I got.

Converse Campaign-Coming Soon

I shot the new Converse ad campaign last week Thursday and Friday, it was awesme, think I shot some of he nicest work I've done in a while. But I'll only be able to put the stuff up here in a few weeks so be patient. My old G4 iBook crashed on Saturday half an hour after I backed up the Converse job onto my external hard drive, R.I.P. old friend, so this is my first post on my shiny new MacBook. So here is a pic of one of the models from the Converse shoot, not a great shot but I really like his tattoo.

New Portfolio Blog

I have started a new blog, one that is more like a website with my portfolio broken down into categories. I'm still working on it, trying to decide on which images to add and which to leave out. It is up and running so if you want to have a look, click here. It also has a 'photo of the day' section on the opening page so, hopefully, I'm going to be able to upload a new pic everyday.

Andrew van Rensburg Design

My brother, Andrew, has just finished his Diploma in design at the Vaal University. I went to his end of year exhibition last Friday and was so stoked when I saw his work. His work was cleaner and a bit more slick than the others in his class. These are some of his designs that I saw. The first 2 are business cards and a letterhead for a company , and the 3rd one is a poster and letterhead for a restaurant, and the last one was for i-Jusi Magazine. Since he isn't going to be studying anymore he is going to be looking for a job, so if you want to contact him for any reason, click here.

Calendar Girl

I was asked to shoot a shot for an Absolut Vodka/GQ calendar. The brief was that the pic should be sexy and have something to do with the shape of Absolut blah blah blah. So I shot these with the idea that the girl and the skirt would make the shape of the bottle, I worked on some to get the exact bottle shape but these are the unworked ones. Don't want Photoshoped to hell pics on the blog do we? The dress was made by a local designer, Lunar, and was worn by Sienna Miller for British Vogue.

It's All Just Hype

Shot the December cover and fashion editorial for Hype Magazine this month.

'I’m like Che Guevara with bling on, I’m complex.' Jay-Z

That's Not Cricket

I'm not the biggest rugby fan, so this world cup vibe didn't do much for me. But what was rad was that I got to shoot the Morkel brothers, from the Proteas, for SA Cricketer Magazine. So this was for the cover and a 4 page spread in the mag. Cricket is the business, by the way.

Drag

I still haven't finished my story on drag queens, and I know I said I would only put the series on the blog when it was done, but I really want to get this stuff out there to get some feedback. So here is some of the photographs so far.

A Rainy Saturday

I went to Newlands, Johannesburg today with Leksa to find a post box she had seen that was in the shape of a heart. (We need it for a shoot, if you were wondering.) We found the post box and also got hella lost, but it helped because I got these pics somewhere.

Kids At Ikholwa House

These are portraits of two kids orphaned by aids. Sad as hell. They were shot at Ikholwa house here in Johannesburg where they care for children orphaned by aids. If you would like to learn more or help out, go here.

Hung On A Wall

I'm busy shooting a new series of portraits, I started shooting it last week sometime and have done 4 shots since. I don't want to put it on my blog until the story is done, I'm planning to shoot 6 more so hopefully in a week or so it will be finished. Here is a shot I did a while shooting one of the portraits yesterday, it looks nothing like the stuff I'm shooting but it does sort of fit in with the story in a way. So check in to see updates.

David Allen Harvey

David Allen Harvey is another photographer from the Magnum group that I respect a hell of a lot. He has shot over 40 essays for National Geographic and has published two books, Cuba and Divided Soul. You can check the books out here. He has also got an amazing blog where he writes about his work, photographers he respects, and gives advice for photographers.

'all of my ex-students out there know that i say one thing over and over and over again....give yourself the "assignment" or the "grant" that you would dream someone would give you....find a personal project and do it without regard for later "sales"...you must do this in your "spare time"....make your "spare time" longer and longer and longer.....the best kind of "commercial success" or "artistic success" will come to you only if you work in this way.....it will come in ways that you cannot imagine....you cannot plan for this....you must go with your gut....only in this way will anyone, editor or publisher or gallerist, ever see who you really are...what you really DO...' David Allan Harvey

And as you may have noticed, just below the archive section on the right, I have categorized all my blog posts. So now you can browse through older posts with a bit more ease. So, try it out already!

Aren't You Too Old To Be Skating?

I went shooting/ skating with Brendan Body on Saturday, he needed shots for his over 30's article for the next issue of Session. I shot pics of him and of Ockie tearing away in their ripe old age, until Brendan dropped of a bank and bruised his heel. Shot some other random pics along the way.
And here is the first skating shot of myself. I set it up and Brendan Body shot the photo for me, what a lovely little nose-pick.

A Bit Of Hate

It is a Saturday morning in sunny Johannesburg, I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to do the rest of the day, maybe skate, have a beer later? Then I saw this pic that Neil Hughes shot in Barcelona, I'm so bummed right now that he is there, and we are all here. I hope you all feel the same..........

Digging Up Old Dirt

So it's that time of the year again that I go digging around old work for this here blog. These are a few portraits I still love. The guy on the zebra is Paulo from 340ml/ Tumi and the Volume, it was taken at a shoot ST[E]AK and I were doing for Stage Magazine back in 2005. It is one of those shots in between the 'serious' shooting. The other is from my first commissioned shoot in 2002, believe it or not, for Session Skateboarding Magazine. It was shot in Pretoria at a skate demo with the Osiris team from the States. The guy at the top right of the series is Chris Pastras, for those of you who don't really follow skateboarding, he is the guy that started Stereo Skateboards with Jason Lee back in the 90's. Then we have Ali Boulala, some guy and Jerry Hsu.
