Note To Self- Shoot The Blk Jks Soon

I have been wanting to shoot the Blk Jks since they have been back in Johannesburg. I took my camera with to a show a few weeks back but only managed to shoot a few frames. One of them is the one in this post. I saw the guitarist, Mpumi who is the one in the photograph, on Thursday night and we've made some loose plans to shoot sometime soon. Hopefully I get my shit together and do it.

Premature Holiday Mode

Just checked my blog and realized how slack I have been with posting. Probably has something to do with the fact that I'm getting into holiday mode way too soon and just feel like fly fishing and sinking a few cold ones. I've also done a few shoots that I can't release yet but for your viewing pleasure here are a few of those shots. The first shot is from the Cosmo/ Face of Africa shoot which we shot in Zanzibar, the second is a fashion editorial for Dossier which we shot in Durban, and the third is from a shoot with the Blk Jks for Dossier. What is it? An online pearler of a rag
Who did it? The legendary Stefan Naude' aka Steak. Yes, he is still alive...
What's inside? 'It will contain general views of the restless public, their interests, ideas and social commentary from relevant subjects to promote forward thinking and general chaos.'

Blk Jks In Clash

Clash Magazine in the U.K. is running 6 of my Blk Jks photographs in one of their upcoming issues. I'm pretty stoked to have some of my work in there, here is one of the pics they are using. I'll try get the layout from them when it is out so I can upload it here.

Cons, Blood, and Ludicris

Still waiting to get the go ahead to put the Converse campaign on here, and also for the new SANBS campaign I shot this week. SANBS is the South African National Blood Service, by the way. We shot in Soweto and Fordsburg with graf artists Rasti and Dave. It turned out really well and might be made into a TV commercial if client gives the nod. Also shot a few portraits for Nike, they are going to be exhibited at the V.I.P. Ludacris show at Melrose Arch where I was told that if you are someone you will be there. I won't be there.

NOFX and Fuzigish

I was asked by JP, from Fuzigish, to shoot pics at the NOFX gig at the Bassline on Monday night. I only got to shoot for about 3 songs during the gig because the barricade that they setup up for photographers collapsed, and NOFX didn't allow photographers on stage so.... Here is what I got.

Digging Up Old Dirt

So it's that time of the year again that I go digging around old work for this here blog. These are a few portraits I still love. The guy on the zebra is Paulo from 340ml/ Tumi and the Volume, it was taken at a shoot ST[E]AK and I were doing for Stage Magazine back in 2005. It is one of those shots in between the 'serious' shooting. The other is from my first commissioned shoot in 2002, believe it or not, for Session Skateboarding Magazine. It was shot in Pretoria at a skate demo with the Osiris team from the States. The guy at the top right of the series is Chris Pastras, for those of you who don't really follow skateboarding, he is the guy that started Stereo Skateboards with Jason Lee back in the 90's. Then we have Ali Boulala, some guy and Jerry Hsu.

The Hellphones

I had to make due with photographing the Hellphones at Groove Bar in Midrand on Saturday, they were playing gig there that night so we all met up before to shoot some publicity shots. I personally dig this band, check your gig guides and go to their next show, that's an order. Over and out.

The Smith Hotels

Good old ST[E]AK has taken my photographs from Fashion Week and used them for a Back Hotels album cover. They are influenced by The Smiths album covers from back in the day, I think they're awesome. Go look here to see the rest of them. Stef has also been kind enough to put a little poll on his blog where you can vote for how tight my pants are, ahhh, friends.

Don't Ever Go To Sun City

I shot yet another cd cover on Friday, it was for a local R&B guy called Loyiso. We did the shoot at Sun City and it turned out to be the longest shoot I've ever been on. We left Jozi at 5 in the morning, we didn' start shooting until 10 and we only did our last shot at about 7 in the evening. I don't understand why everything took so long but it did, we didn't even stop for lunch. So I only got to eat when I got home last night at 21.30. We got to shoot in a suite called the 'King Suite' which costs a mere R46700 a night, Forest Whitaker is one of the people who stayed there and can obviously afford it. Why?

Valerie, Kenya's 'Idol'

I shot a cd cover for a girl called Valerie from Kenya on Tuesday, she won the Kenyan Pop Stars competition, or something like that. Her manager said that he would like to get me back to Kenya to shoot some stuff for him there as well, hopefully it happens because I'm dying to see Africa. Here is the stuff we did in Brixton, Jozi.

About Me

SL asked me for a few words about myself for their contributers page so I asked Stef (ST[E]AK) to write it for me and this is what his little hand wrote:

'Warren is a photographer just like so many photographers in Johannesburg or the country for that mattter. He carries a black backpack with a tripod on the side and likes to have a few toots at a counter that serves barley pop with a side order of loud music. Blk Jks Last Day In The Studio

So the Blk Jks have been recording their full length album, they have been in the studio for the last two weeks slaving away. I joined them in the studio on their last day and just before they leave for Cape Town for their gig with Lark. This album is going to be better than the feeling you got on Christams morning when you were 6. It will be out around August or January.
